As the spring 2014 semester commences, we proudly launch a year-long celebration of the 20th anniversary of the formation of the department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management.
We hope you'll join us for a number of special activities celebrating this milestone!
First, our colloquium series will take the theme of “Living in the Anthropocene,” featuring speakers such as Tony Barnosky (Integrative Biology) on biodiversity, extinction and tipping points and Pam Ronald (UC Davis) on the issues surrounding agriculture of the Anthropocene. Check out the companion e-reader of related resources collected by department chair Ron Amundson, available in iBook or pdf format.
Within the theme of the Anthropocene, we are also excited to present journalist Chris Mooney as the 2014 Hans Jenny Memorial lecturer. Mooney is the author of four books, including Unscientific America and the New York Times bestseller The Republican War on Science. He is a contributing writer at Mother Jones and also hosts Climate Desk Live. Mooney will speak on the topic of "The Science of Why We Don't Believe in Science" on Wednesday, April 2 (International House, 7 p.m.), and will also participate in a special graduate student seminar. We're also happy to be co-sponsoring the Horace M. Albright Lecture with the College of Natural Resources and the Master of Development Practice. This year's lecture features Pulitzer-Prize winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel and UCLA professor of geography Jared Diamond, speaking on Wednesday April 30 at I-House.
In addition to these events, look for a new series of articles on our website, through which we plan to highlight the exciting research, teaching and accomplishments of our ESPM faculty and students.
