Research Description
Self-perpetuating systems
I am in John Harte's lab. I am investigating a hypothesized feedback system in which biology and geomorphology reinforce each other in the mound-pool microtopography of many California grasslands. In previous work I wrote numerical models of production, consumption and diffusion in a simple soil to compare with theoretical predictions and experimental observations of N2O.
Applied mathematics
My bachelors' is in mathematics--not applied--but I spent a decade working in commercial software before becoming so curious about soil that I had to come back to school. I figured mathematical analysis and simulation would be useful somewhere, so I studied statistics and applied mathematics as well as soil at the University of Washington.
