Congratulations to Environmental Science, Policy, and Management Professors Paolo D’Odorico and Trevor Keenan on receiving awards from the American Geophysical Union (AGU).
D’Odorico won the AGU Hydrology Peter S. Eagleson Hydrologic Sciences Award for outstanding contributions to the science of hydrology over the course of his career. Keenan won the AGU Global Environmental Change Piers J. Sellers Global Environmental Change Mid-Career Award for outstanding contributions in research, educational, or societal impacts in the area of global environmental change, especially through interdisciplinary approaches. Each honoree is credited with transforming scientific understanding of the world, improving our communities, and contributing to solutions for a sustainable future.
D’Odorico’s research focuses on how hydrological processes shape terrestrial ecosystems. His work uses field observations and process-based models to study soil moisture, plant water stress, desertification, and ecosystem resilience. He also studies the globalization of water through virtual water trade and international land investments, examining how these developments affect water equity, societal resilience, environmental stewardship, and food security.
Keenan studies how terrestrial ecosystems respond to climate variability and long-term environmental change, including how they exchange carbon and water with the atmosphere. His research group combines large ecological datasets, remote sensing, ecosystem models, field studies, and data science to better understand ecosystem function.
D’Odorico and Keenan join a distinguished group of scientists, leaders, and communicators recognized by AGU. Each honoree reflects the organization’s vision for a thriving, sustainable, and equitable future supported by scientific discovery, innovation, and action.
Honorees will be recognized at AGU’s 2026 Annual Meeting, which will be held in San Francisco this December. Learn more about all the 2026 AGU honorees at the AGU website.
