Congratulations to Susan Hubbard on joining the 2020 class of the National Academy of Engineering. The Academy recognizes those who have made significant contributions to engineering research, practice, or education. Hubbard, an adjunct professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Policy, and Management, was elected for her work on hydrogeophysics, biogeophysics, and the geophysics of permafrost.

As associate lab director of the Earth Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Hubbard uses geophysical techniques and integrated data sets to understand terrestrial ecosystems and water availability. Her research analyzes permafrost variability in vulnerable Arctic ecosystems and monitors the physical changes associated with carbon degradation.

Hubbard’s cohort at the National Academy of Engineering also includes Per Peterson and Paulo Monteiro, two faculty members in the UC Berkeley College of Engineering.
