Across the Western United States, particularly in California, large wildfires have become increasingly frequent and more destructive. Now Fire Forward, a training program in California directed by alumna Sasha Berleman, teaches volunteers how to use prescribed burns to help mitigate future disasters. In partnership with local Native tribes, the program incorporates traditional knowledge and the longstanding Native American practices of using fire to manage the landscape.
