Congratulations to Dennis Baldocchi, professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, on being named the 2025 Verner E. Suomi Technology Medal recipient by the American Meteorological Society. The award recognizes highly significant technological achievements in the atmospheric or oceanic and hydrologic sciences, encompassing the entire spectrum of instrumentation, as well as observational, measurement, data transmission, and data analysis and synthesis methodologies.
Baldocchi received the award for his pioneering work estimating surface-atmosphere exchanges, leadership in establishing global flux networks for terrestrial biomes, and exemplary collaboration with scientists around the world. For more than a decade, he has helped lead and coordinate FLUXNET, an international “network of networks” of earth system scientists who employ the eddy covariance method in their research. Collectively, FLUXNET links over 1000 active and historic observation stations across most global climates and biomes.
In addition to his research, Baldocchi currently serves as the Executive Associate Dean and Director of Agriculture and Natural Resource Programs in Rausser College.
