Yee's research focuses on characterizing physicochemical properties of organic aerosols that shape Earth’s climate and adversely affect human health. As a project scientist and PI, she is revealing the sheer chemical complexity of many atmospheric intermediates, while bringing focus to those sources and processes which are ubiquitous and most important for air quality and climate. As a UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow, she focused on understanding the contribution of biogenic volatile organic compounds to atmospheric organic aerosol formation in the presence and absence of anthropogenic pollution. Her research entailed chemical speciation of complex mixtures of volatile organic compounds and organic aerosol constituents measured in the atmosphere and laboratory. Elucidation of the chemical processes in organic aerosol formation affects our understanding of the role of atmospheric organic aerosols in Earth’s climate system and biogeochemical cycles. As a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow at Caltech, her Ph.D. dissertation elucidated chemical pathways to organic aerosol formation from fossil fuels and biomass burning.
