Angela Chen’s research examines how environmental performance can be assessed in manufacturing and agricultural supply chains when direct information is incomplete. She studies the measurement, attribution, and interpretation of environmental impacts in physical production processes, with particular attention to making environmental information more decision-useful for both industrial decision-makers and environmental policymakers. Her broader interests include pollution modeling and the application of artificial intelligence to identifying emerging sustainability challenges and opportunities for environmental innovation.
Prior to returning to academia, Angela founded ProductBio, a venture-backed sustainability data and software platform adopted by 28 U.S. cities that helped direct more than $2 billion in public procurement toward environmentally preferable goods and services while supporting Scope 3 reporting. She also served as an invited Research Scientist at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where she led a research subgroup examining measurement reliability in carbon markets and related challenges in scaling voluntary environmental markets.
